I refer to 100 Must-Read Science Fiction Novels by Nick Rennison and Stephen E Andrews.
Need one buy the book to find out what novels it covers?
Discussion of how they picked 'em here and here.

Date: 2006-11-26 04:01 pm (UTC)The main reason why the list of titles included has not appeared online is because we don't want people to assume the book is merely a 'best of' type “list book”, as it is instead more of an overview of the SF field as a whole that is built up through the individual book recommendations. Any ‘best of’ is just too subjective, even for an extremely well-read SF devotee.
..and of course, one of the comments below does appear to assume the book is just a simple ‘list book’ and not a proper reference work (no offence intended, mate). Naturally, writers would prefer it if potential readers didn’t make too many assumptions.
