It would have been interesting if, the morning after the preacher had predicted the Rapture, we had awoken to find that all the people were still here-- but all the computers had vanished.
? They were expecting Rapture at 6pm local time? And they were using their watch to wait for it? Since when would we be imposing Daylight Savings Time and Universal Time upon God? Myself I am about 42 min difference between UT and natural time (noon truly peak position of sun), putting the expectation to about 7:42 pm. I think the weatherman called the all-clear for Rapture at about 6:21pm, but gave a chance for thunderstorms overnight.
About 20 years ago, somebody I knew wrote such a story, though it wasn't explcitly Rapture. Based on what I now know about him, I'll wager somebody else wrote it first, using remarkably similar words.
been done I'm sure I've read a short story where the humans had built a gigantic robot army to fight the battle of Armageddon, so when the battle is over, it's the machines that get bodily lifted up to Heaven.
