You may already know Theo Gray, collector of elements and passionate lover of chemistry, for his remarkable wooden Periodic Table Table.Or you may have seen his book Mad Science or his columns in Popular Science.

When I met Theo, he was carrying a spinthariscope in his backpack, which instantly endeared him to me.

Theo has a new book coming out, for which you can see a Youtube trailer: The Elements. This doubles as the first authorized video of Professor Tom Lehrer's eponymous song. For that reason alone, you'll want to see it.

The Elements is due to be published in October.

This looks like it will be an interesting book. Now, if someone would combine a book like this with the stories from Disch's Periodic Table Of Science Fiction . . .

And Swanwick's short-shorts! (which are no longer online, dammit)

Oops, I meant Michael Swanwick. I don't know why I thought Disch wrote them. My mistake.

Blast! I was hoping that was a collection I'd not seen.... There's the Primo Levi collection, though, but it's mostly nonfiction.

When I was in school I wanted to make a periodic table as a project, but I wanted to attacha sample of as many of the elements as I could. Then as I researched many of the elements, I discoved apart from some being simply unobtainabel, and a few purely thoretical, that this table could also be pretty f'ing dangerous...

....good times....

Where did you order this? I can't find it on Amazon or Powell's websites.

Great video, and the book is definitely going on my to-buy list.

But I feel moved to post a link to get another song using that tune...

Boy, I'm glad they put the music in the credits. It was driving me nuts trying to figure out where I knew the part that wasn't Lehrer from!
