Okay, I have never read much G.K. Chesterton. The Man Who Was Thursday didn't impress me much.

But certain people who do impress me are great Chesterton enthusiasts. There must be something there. Mrs. Husted loved to stand in front of the classroom and recite-- nay, declaim-- hunks of "Lepanto." Thirty years ago, Tom Merrigan recommended I read Orthodoxy.

Sometimes it takes me a long time to get around to doing things. Today, I started reading Orthodoxy.

I very much liked his writing in the first few pages. One passage stood out, and it is this I wish to bring to your attention:

It is one thing to describe an interview with a gorgon or a griffin, a creature who does not exist. It is another thing to discover that the rhinoceros does exist and then take pleasure in the fact that he looks as if he didn’t.

I think I am going to like this book.
