One of my colleagues used to live in South Bend, Indiana.

Monday, I encountered him while walking over to the Highrise.

"Did you hear the news?" said he, "Notre Dame didn't lose last weekend!"

"Great!" I said, foolishly taking the bait. "Whom were they playing?"

"Nobody! They didn't have a game this week."

When Michigan State beats Notre Dame instead of the other way around, you know that the End Times have arrived. (Both of my parents graduated from Michigan State, and they dreaded the annual phone call from me right after the big rivalry game where I'd ask if Michigan State was emphasizing academics instead of athletics again this year. I figured that I'd let them glow in the pure shock this year; besides, I'm having too much fun publicly commenting on the crowd behavior after a Southern Methodist University game gets out as "the running of the coke dealers".)
