Landed in New Jersey yesterday, where K and I and my sister are visiting my brother the Slightly Famous Journalist and his wife. Holiday plans included "tripping the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New York."

Last night, in the wee hours, a transit strike began. Oops. Put Plan B into operation.

The PATH train from here to Manhattan is unaffected, so we zipped in this afternoon and had a grand time hiking around a limited area of Greenwich Village. It was much less crowded than usual-- a ghost town, by local standards. In the evening, we caught a play, then grabbed the PATH out.

There's talk that, tomorrow, Broadway matinee tickets might become available as theatergoers are unwilling to attempt to get downtown. So maybe we'll try to hit some big-time musical...

If the strike continues through the rest of our visit, we won't do any museums or stores that would take a subway or cab ride to visit. But that leaves plenty to explore near the PATH stations.

Talk about killing the golden goose. Whatever the transit union hoped to win from the city administration I think they've lost in public support. So are you going to hit the Guava King (IIRC the name) on 42nd for a real hotdog this trip"

We passed someplace with a name like Gray's Papaya yesterday, along with three different shops selling merchandise from Tibet, and one with stuff from Nepal. Amazing what high population density can accomplish. You could turn Aurora, Illinois upside down and not find a single papaya-juice bar.

Don't know whether we will be in the vicinity of Gray's, or Guava King, or whatever it is, but your opinion carries a great deal of weight, and I love hot dogs, so will be on the lookout!

Mea Culpa, I'm wtong. It's really the Papaya king and it's up on 121st, here's a link w/a map etc http://makeashorterlink.com/?S62E4295C Anywho, NYC 'dogs are in a world of their own, still great but not like the rest of the US. Umm, now that I think about it that describes NYC to a tee.
