On Twitter, actor Tom Hanks writes about the passing of a fellow actor, Leonard Nimoy, with a nice sentiment about his craft.

This led me to post a response.

(For the bewildered, context here and here.)

Ahahahaha! I love that fans are pointing out all the things Nimoy did & was. I was so irritated when the national news last night treated it like "Cult Figure Dies--All the Geeks Salute Mr. Spock", as though Nimoy had done nothing significant but act & had never had a role besides Spock. >:-(

What for me was most lovely is the actor, the man, the person, made a lovely life for himself and his family and for many others through handling wisely this character with which he comprehended he would be identified forever, no matter what else he did.

It's like the actress, Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha on Sex and the City: she could change the color of her hair, pull it tight against her head, wear the most dismal clothes and be as serious as called for, but nobody saw her as Mrs. Kipling. She's forever Samantha.

Ya gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. Nimoy knew when to fold -- wiser even, maybe, than Spock?

Love, C.

And Kim Cattrall played a Vulcan too, in Star Trek 6!
