A Conversation in Front of the Television
May. 22nd, 2011 10:48 pmMy wife, bless her, loves action movies. When she's working at home on a Sunday afternoon, she'll switch on TV and dial around the cable channels. Now cable channels like to repeat certain movies fairly often; I suppose these are the popular ones. K will always stop on a channel if it has the action-packed latterday The Mummy or one of its sequels. At a frantic pace, protagonists are chased around, attacked by lots of bad guys, and menaced by monsters. She finds this a comfort.
Sometimes I tease her about this. I've lost count of the number of times she's seen The Mummy, and I think she has, too.
Today I came into the room, and observed that The Mummy Returns1 was onscreen. "Another Mummy movie, eh?" I said.
"And the first Mummy movie is on another channel right now!" she announced, knowing that the idea would amuse me.
"So it's just like that well-known children's book!" I said.
I think she rolled her eyes, but after all these years of marriage,2 she knows what she's expected to say.
"Which well-known children's book?"
"Heather Has Two Mummies!"

A Book Well Worth a Dollar
May. 22nd, 2011 11:27 pmI dropped by the Aurora Public Library today and, as is my wont, looked over the used-books display. Hardcovers may be purchased for a dollar.
This was a hardcover. This was a dollar.

I am only mildly interested in naval affairs, but I recognized the value of this reference book. Fred T. Jane published the first version of the annual book that would eventually become Jane's Fighting Ships in 1898. It's the book you consult for quick information about any naval vessel on Earth. A new edition will run you most of a thousand papooses.

In the pages of Jane's, Italian Subs are more than just a tasty sandwich.
More often, I have consulted Jane's All the World's Aircraft. Since my teenage years as a military aviation buff, I longed for my own copy. Some years ago, kind friends gave me the 1960 edition. Now, through a stroke of good fortune, I am also the owner of Jane's Fighting Ships 2000-2001.
