Fifty Years since Vostok 1
Apr. 11th, 2011 01:24 pmWe've been watching the 50th anniversaries march through the Space Age. Three and a half years ago, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first satellite. A few weeks from now, first American in space; ten months from now, first American in orbit; two years from now, first woman in space, and so forth.
Tuesday, 12 April, will be the fiftieth anniversary of the day Yuri Gagarin became the first person to orbit the Earth.

Current news is full of stories about Gagarin. Come tomorrow, no doubt, there will be even more examples.
Jeff Foust's Space Review devotes this week's issue to the anniversary.
Peter Alway (
peteralway) reflects on Gagarin's flight and models inspired by it.
Once again there will be annual Yuri's Night celebrations in many countries.
(Since the first U.S. Shuttle was, conveniently, launched on the 20th
anniversary of Gagarin's flight, we get a 30th anniversary for that at
no extra charge.)
