I'm on Amtrak's Keystone run from Harrisburg to New York. They have both Wifi and 110-volt AC available at each seat in this coach car. O brave new world!

Pennsylvania looks nice. It's a bright, sunny day and, while the leaves are gone from the trees, lawns are still green.

Tuesday and Wednesday, I helped Valli and Harry ferry their cars from Chicagoland to their new home in York Springs, Pennsylvania.

Today (Thursday) and Friday I will be visiting family in Hoboken and exploring New York City.

Saturday, I'll head for Newark, Delaware to see my cousins. Philadelphia-area SF fans should not be alarmed if they become aware of my presence.

Home Monday.

I might get some writing done on this train. If I stop fooling around with blogs and such.

I've considered taking Amtrak from Denver to Chicago (it doesn't stop in or come anywhere near the Springs) for some time, just to see what the experience is like. It's actually not a particularly long run; I think 19 hours if all goes well.

Mostly flat; I've taken that route several times. For scenic wonder, you want to go from Denver to Oakland, California. Old mining facilities, new mining facilities, long tunnels, mountains, potato chip bags in the club car turning into mylar party balloons. One time, I remember crossing a great salt flat in daylight, but the schedule, route, and how far behind schedule it tends to be varies over history, so it is only the mountain journey I can guarantee.

When driving, watch out for deer. Pennsylvania is swarming with them, and it's crazy season.

Bear are also a non-zero collision hazard.

We'll be taking the City of New Orleans up to Chicago again for New Year's. Those who have been reporting that they can't make a long road trip because of various pains should consider the train. You can take long, pain relieving strolls up and down the train while still traveling at 80 miles an hour and the seats recline nicely. OK I still had too much back pain to even take the train for Thanksgiving but I'll be ready to travel by New Year's. Sometimes it's a bit of a drive still from the nearest train station but we've found the combination works well. It's also a pretty good bargain. The coach seats from Hammond to Chicago are half the price of plane tickets.
