Capricon, this coming weekend in Wheeling, Illinois, will keep me fairly busy. Here are my scheduled program items:

MacGyver Would Be Embarrassed - Friday, 02-11-2011 - 11:30 am to 1:00 pm - Botanic Garden A (Special Events)
You know how periodically you feel the need to yell at the TV? Or perhaps throw the book across the room? Come vent about the stupid ways TV shows and authors get their characters out of trouble!

Richard Chwedyk
Mike (Ciggy) Cyganiewicz
Dermot Dobson
Bill Higgins (M)
Kathryn Sullivan

Abandoning the Earth on Short Notice - Friday, 02-11-2011 - 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Botanic Garden B (Special Events)
Sometimes you can see the asteroid coming and have time to make a plan. What happens if someone looks away from the telescope at the wrong time, and now you're on a time crunch? Brainstorm scenarios for the apocalypse and how we might get ourselves out of them.
Bill Higgins (M)
Bryan Palaszewski
Henry Spencer

This Planet Sucks! - Friday, 02-11-2011 - 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm - Elm
How does a sucky planet actually lead to technological development? How much of the planet actually needs to be habitable, and how much can we work around with a little duct tape and creativity?

Br. Guy Consolmagno
Bill Higgins
Ross Martinek (M)
W. A. (Bill) Thomasson

News from the Asteroid Belt - Saturday, 02-12-2011 - 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm - Willow
Breaking news! The asteroid belt has shrunk - it is now a Medium instead of a Large! No, wait, wrong belt. Let's try that again. Breaking news! Join our expert panelists for a look into what's going on with our nearby neighbor in the solar system, the Asteroid Belt.

50 Years of Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - Sunday, 02-13-2011 - 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm - River C (Media)
Hello? Anyone out there? Hello? Can you hear us? How about now? Bill Higgins examines some recent developments in SETI and in our understanding of life on other worlds.
Bill Higgins

This last will include my account of the Project Ozma 50th anniversary workshop to which I was invited last year in Green Bank, West Virginia. Plus a couple of digressions.

My personal opinion in re SETI failure: If there are other civilizations out there, they're likely much older than us. They're set in their ways, comfortable with the way things are, while we're young and rambunctious and like to change things. It's like a Florida retirement community suddenly having a daycare center across the road, blaring Barney music through the PA. If they ignore us, maybe we'll go away.

Wow. Vivid image....

Bill, these are all enticing! I can understand why you might not be able to say No to overbooking.

Some of the topics may not be all that great, but my fellow panelists are terrific...

How I wish I could attend!
Will you be coming to the worldcon in Reno?

If fortune smiles, yes.

The probability of fortune smiling seems small right now. We do have memberships.

"Plus a couple of digressions."
Is there an emoticon for a spit take?
Shouldn't there be?

It doesn't look quite right, but I have nothing better to offer.

Perhaps

I am disappointed that I will not be at con for most of your talks. Yes, I know Cap is a 4 day con but some of us have those pesky things called day jobs.

Crud, I'd like to go to all of those, but I won't be at the con until probably 7 Friday night, leaving Sunday by 1PM, and will probably be busy Saturday afternoon.

See you in the GT suite I guess. One of these days I'm just going to have to mail a camcorder to someone who's going to your stuff, because I never seem to make it for one reason or another.
