A New and Clear Candidate: An Odd Thing about Gov. Palin's Speech

In the transcript of the speech, the word "nuclear" is rendered phonetically as "new-clear," as though the speechwriter was worried that the speaker might mispronounce it.

As a foe of "nucular," I applaud the care taken to pronounce the word correctly. (I would have fixed the spelling before releasing the transcript, but I understand that people in the campaign are very busy and might not have time for such details.)

Except that "new-clear" is also wrong. There's *three* syllables.

True, but seeing "NEW-CLEAR" on your teleprompter gives you a good chance of reaching the correct pronunciation. Also, "newclear" is not as bad as "nucular."

I prefer "Atomic Boomy-Stuff"! Granted, it's not in wide use (yet...)
