Around the Campfire: Remembering George Ewing

George Ewing died in May.

Three nights ago, Guy Wicker gathered the GT folks around the campfire where George often cooked*.
Guy and I read George's story "Pyros" aloud. It's about a group of techies who have conducted an experiment while camping. They've disappeared. So has a substantial piece of the Keewenaw Peninsula.

There were grins of recognition. There were outbusts of laughter. George was working his storytelling magic. It was a good time.

*Not this campfire. A different campfire** nearby.

**Not this campfire either; it is on the other side of the world. But George would have liked to see it.

All right, I had to go look for Darvaza Crater on satellite photos. Apparently, it is bright enough at orbital altitudes that it saturates the cameras: Google inserts a lower-contrast "patch" over that location...
