Particles Above, Particles Below

During Sunday night's spectacular auroral display (through which I managed to sleep), Marty Murphy in Operations took wonderful pictures of skies over Fermilab.

My favorite:

See other pictures here.

Todd Johnson called me to warn about the aurora, but as I was scheduled to go to work at 0430 (to change all the locks on the entrances to a two-mile accelerator, before everybody arrived for work), and I had already fallen asleep, I figured I would have a good chance of seeing the lights when I got up.

Unfortunately, skies were overcast by the time I got outdoors.

And it was cloudy Monday night.

I hear the Sun is still lively, and I may stand a chance of seeing something tonight...

You know, I recall a WindyCon, ten years ago or so, that had a really brilliant aurora display. We pulled over on I-94 around Climax. It was fully into the RED over head. Amazing.

I remember it was quite visual out back of the Hyatt, which is pretty amazing in its own right.

Actually, if it is the one I'm thinking of (and it almost has to be), it was visible from the parking lot of the Woodfield Hyatt itself.

Now that's an aurora!
