Frost and Sunshine at Fermilab

Here's what Fermilab looked like today, the first sunny day I can recall recently.

(By dinnertime it was overcast and gloomy again. That still doesn't spoil the magic of the morning.)

What does that obelisk mark?

Or would you have to kill me after you told me?

And those are some INTERESTING power-line poles!

It's "Acqua Alle Funi," by Fermilab's founding director, Robert Rathbun Wilson, cowboy, physicist, and sculptor. Read the link for more.

Wilson also designed the345 kV power-line poles. He didn't like the conventional criss-cross high-voltage tower.

He had firm opinions on how the place should look. He kept the architects on a tight leash. He tried weird ideas for building designs. Some of them worked well. He appointed an Aesthetics Committee to pick a paint scheme, and to ensure that Fermilab still looked like Fermilab as new construction projects grew up over the years.
